The Shepherd Who Never Leaves

I thought I had Psalm 23 memorized—just nice words for hard days.
Then one long night in a hospital room, staring at machines and fear, those words hit different.
"The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing."
Suddenly it wasn't poetry. It was Jesus, whispering, "I've got you."
If life's valleys feel dark right now—loss, worry, loneliness—this psalm isn't a greeting card. It's a promise from your Good Shepherd.
Like a Lamb Who Keeps Wandering
We sheep are prone to stray, aren't we?
We chase worries, chase fixes, chase anything but the Shepherd.
But He doesn't give up. He leads to green pastures (rest), quiet waters (peace), right paths (guidance).
Even when the road dips into the "valley of the shadow of death"—that scary place of deep pain—He walks right beside.
No fear needed. His rod protects. His staff pulls us close.
Enemies All Around—But a Table Set
Picture this: Trouble staring you down, yet God spreads a feast.
Anoints your head with oil (honor, healing). Fills your cup till it overflows (joy that spills over).
Why? Because your Shepherd defeated every enemy on the cross.
Chased by Goodness
The psalm ends with goodness and love following you—all your days.
The word is stronger: pursuing, chasing you down like a faithful sheepdog.
And forever? His house—home with Him.
Jesus said it plain: "I am the good shepherd... I lay down my life for the sheep" (John 10).
That's our Psalm 23 Shepherd.
No More Straying Alone
When fear creeps in, hear His voice: "I am with you."
Rest in that today.
Prayer
I've wandered so often, chasing empty things.
Thank You Jesus, my Good Shepherd—You laid down His life, who walks every valley with me.
Lead me to Your rest.
Protect me in the dark.
Fill me till I overflow.
Chase me with Your goodness all my days, and bring me home forever.
I trust You, my Shepherd.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
