Don’t Scare the Holy Spirit Away

A dove, an open Bible, and a cross

Jesus, the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit

It’s one of the few things mentioned in all four gospels—Jesus is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit.

Yet, for centuries, the church hasn’t talked much about this.

Let’s look at John 1:32–34, where John the Baptist says: “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him (Jesus)... this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.”

What Does the Dove Represent?

A dove brings to mind purity, meekness, and sacrifice—a life laid down. This lamb-like nature is what draws the Holy Spirit.

It’s where He settles and stays. Jesus was always sensitive to the Spirit; He never scared Him off. The Spirit remained on Him.

Are We Sensitive to the Spirit?

Once baptized by the Spirit, are we as sensitive as Jesus?

Let’s reflect on things that attract or repel the Spirit from Ephesians 4:29–32: “Let no corrupt word proceed... do not grieve the Holy Spirit... let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and slander be put away... be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving.”

What Grieves the Spirit?

Unwholesome words, bitterness, anger, harshness—they’re all opposite to the lamb’s nature.

What Attracts the Spirit?

Kindness, tender hearts, forgiveness—these make the Spirit want to remain with us. The secret to keeping the Holy Spirit close is cultivating the lamb-like character.

Reflect

It’s possible to grieve the Spirit by my words and attitude. But it’s also possible to grow a Christ-like character that invites Him in. Which will you choose today?

A Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, You showed us how to live in step with the Spirit. I want to be more like You. Without You, I often react in ways that push the Spirit away. Help me grow in Christ’s character. Thank You for Your work in me. Amen.
