Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
In John 16:12–15, Jesus is saying goodbye to His disciples. He tells them He’s going away but promises to send the Holy Spirit in His place.
Then He explains how the Holy Spirit will help—guiding, teaching, and bringing the Father’s truth right to their hearts.
Why the Holy Spirit is ‘He’ and not ‘It’
Here's a cool grammar tidbit straight from Jesus. In Greek, the word for spirit, pneuma, is actually neuter, so it should be "it."
But Jesus breaks the grammar rules and says “He,” “He,” “He.” This shows us the Spirit is not an “it,” a thing or an idea, but a real person—fully alive and active.
The Holy Spirit Is a Person
Just like God the Father and Jesus the Son, the Holy Spirit is a person.
To really grow in your relationship with Him, you have to relate to Him as a person—not some mysterious force or abstract concept.
Think of Him as close and real as your closest family or friend.
Until you treat the Holy Spirit as a person, not just an influence or a vague theological idea, it will be hard to truly follow and be led by Him in your daily life.
Reflect
What makes someone a person to you? Do you think of the Holy Spirit like that? Take some time today to see Him as a person who cares deeply for you.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, blessed be Your name for pouring out Your Holy Spirit. I want to be led by Him every day. Help me to honor Him and relate to Him just as I relate to You—for Your glory. Amen.
