Don’t Go Back to Rules!

The Greatest Obstacle: Legalism
What’s the biggest thing that keeps people from being led by the Holy Spirit? It’s legalism—trying to be right with God by keeping a list of rules.
But Christianity isn’t a rulebook; it’s a relationship. A relationship with Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Adding Rules God Didn’t Give
Legalism also means adding requirements God never asked for. God’s Word shows us what He requires, and no one—no church, denomination, or person—has the authority to add more.
The Holy Spirit is Lord alone; He won’t share that Lordship with rules and regulations.
The Law Isn’t the Answer
Many churches say they’re not under the Law of Moses, but they have their own set of rules. If the Law given by God couldn’t make us righteous, no human-made set of laws can.
The root of sin isn’t just wanting to do wrong—it’s wanting to be independent from God.
Paul reminds us in Romans 3:20, “No one is justified by the works of the Law; rather, the Law shows us our sin and our need for God’s grace.”
The Danger of Going Back to the Law
Starting in the Spirit but then turning back to rules is a trap. Paul warns that returning to the Law brings a curse (Galatians 3:10). Jeremiah 17:5 says, “Cursed is the one who trusts in man instead of the Lord.”
Two Paths, No Mixing
You either rely on the Spirit or on a system of rules—they can't mix. Want to be led by the Holy Spirit? You’re not under law but under grace.
Reflect
Sin’s core isn’t just doing wrong, but seeking independence from God.
A Prayer for Today
Dear Lord, I want to walk close with You, but I see my heart’s tendency to be independent and self-righteous. Thank You for forgiving me and for Your patience. Your grace through Jesus is enough to make me holy and right with You. Amen
