The Holy Spirit Will Give You Power

What Power Does the Spirit Give?

Paul tells Timothy something powerful in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”

Let’s focus on that first word—power.

The Power Jesus Promised

Before Jesus left His disciples, He said: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be My witnesses.”

This wasn’t military power, or muscle power, or intellectual smarts. It was supernatural, spiritual power—the kind that backs up a supernatural message.

A Supernatural Message Needs Supernatural Power

The gospel is about a man who died, was in the tomb for three days, then rose and went to heaven.

That’s beyond natural. So it only makes sense that the power backing up this message is beyond natural too.

When the Holy Spirit came, that supernatural power burst forth in Jerusalem and began to flow out to the whole world.

Don’t Imitate the World

If you chase after the world’s methods or success, you’re turning away from real spiritual power—the power of the Holy Spirit.

That power exalts Jesus, brings miracles, convicts hearts, and brings fresh new life. That’s what God wants for His children.

Reflect

When I copy the world’s ways, or want what the world praises, am I turning my back on the true source of power—the Holy Spirit?

A Prayer for Today

Lord Jesus, the world needs to see You and know You as their Savior. I confess that sometimes I try to represent You using other sources besides Your Spirit. Forgive me. I turn away from worldly methods and ask You to fill me again with the power of Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
