The Verse That Broke My Heart (In the Best Way)
Psalm 103:7 hit me like a freight train one morning:
He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the sons of Israel.
Translation:
The crowd got fireworks.
Moses got friendship.
Everyone saw the same Red Sea split. Everyone ate the same manna.
But only one man walked off the mountain glowing because he’d seen God’s heart.
When God Feels Like a Vending Machine
Be honest.
How many of our prayers sound like this: “Lord, fix my marriage.
Heal my body.
Pay this bill.
And please do it by Friday. Amen.”
We’re not evil-genius-level experts at asking for acts.
I’ve done it.
I’ve begged for the miracle while barely bothering to know the Miracle-Worker. It’s like dating someone just for the gifts they bring.
Eventually the gifts run out… and so does the relationship.
Moses’ Dangerous Prayer
Exodus 33:13 records the moment Moses refuses to settle:
If You are pleased with me, teach me Your ways so I may know You…
He wasn’t asking for another plague or pillar of fire.
He was asking for God Himself. And God’s answer?
Come up here. I’ll show you My glory.
Moses got the backstage pass because he wanted the Person, not just the performance.
The Israelites’ Tragic Trade
They saw water burst from a rock… and grumbled two days later.
They watched darkness swallow Egypt… and built a golden calf six weeks later.
Miracles every morning, mutiny every night. Why?
Because miracles don’t change hearts that don’t know the heart behind them. You can have bread from heaven in your stomach and still have a stranger in your soul.
The Question I Dare You to Pray This Week
Next time you kneel (or pace the kitchen at 3 a.m.), try slipping this line in before the grocery list of requests:
“Father, today… show me Your ways. Let me see Your heart in this mess.
I don’t just want the miracle—I want to know You.”
Then sit still long enough to listen. Watch what happens when you trade “Fix this” for “Reveal Yourself.”
Bottom Line (The One Moses Died Smiling About)
Miracles get us through the night. Knowing God’s ways gets us home. One day the Red Sea will be a memory.
But the God who walked Moses up the mountain will still be holding your hand. Choose the better thing.
Prayer to Take With You
Lord,
I’m tired of living from miracle to miracle.
Teach me Your ways.
Burn Your heart into mine.
Let me know You so deeply
that when the next storm comes,
I won’t need a sign—
I’ll already recognize the voice that calms it.
I choose friendship over fireworks.
Show me You.
Amen.
