Do Not Be Spiritually Deaf!
The terrifying moment your heart stops answering when Jesus calls
The Safe That Only Opens to One Voice
Imagine a bank vault programmed to unlock only when the manager speaks.
No key.
No code.
Just his unique voice saying the exact phrase.
Your heart is that vault.
It was designed to swing wide open
only when the Good Shepherd speaks.
“My sheep hear My voice…
they will not follow a stranger.” (John 10:27, 5)
But there’s a condition that turns the vault into a tomb:
spiritual deafness.
The Day Jesus Looked at the Crowd and Quoted a Funeral
Matthew 13:
Crowds pressing in, ears wide open, eyes staring.
Yet Jesus sighs and says:
“They hear but never understand…
see but never perceive…
their heart has become calloused.”
Calloused.
Hard.
Thick-skinned.
Dead to the touch.
That word “calloused” is the Greek word for “to cover with thick skin or scar tissue.”A heart that once flinched at sin
now shrugs at it.
A heart that once leapt when Jesus spoke
now doesn’t even twitch.
How Spiritual Deafness Happens (It’s Slow, Then Sudden)
You don’t wake up deaf.
You get there one ignored whisper at a time.
“I’ll read the Bible tomorrow.”
“That sermon doesn’t apply to me.”
“I’ll repent… later.”
Each excuse is a tiny layer of scar tissue.
A thousand tiny “laters” and suddenly the Shepherd’s voice sounds like background noise.
The Terrifying Diagnosis Jesus Gave
“Otherwise they might…
see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn—
and I would heal them.”
Translation:
The scariest judgment is not fire and brimstone.
It’s when God finally lets the callus stay
and the heart stops hurting enough to turn back.
The Cure Before the Callus Sets
Don’t wait for a miracle.
Start softening the only way scar tissue softens:
Honest confession (“Lord, I can’t hear You anymore.”)
Immediate obedience to the last thing you did hear
Daily exposure to His voice (even when you feel nothing)
Hearts get tender again one flinch at a time.
Prayer for Everyone Who’s Afraid They’ve Gone Too Far
Father, I do not want to be spiritually deaf,
so I pray You’ll help me to have a heart that hears You and responds to You.
Thank You for Your Holy Spirit,
Who is with me every day,
helping me along the way on which You lead me.
And I just want to thank You Lord,
that not only can I listen to Your voice,
but You listen to my voice as well!
In Jesus’ Name, amen!
