DAY 9 – Contending by Pastor Dick
I want you to know how hard I am contending for you and for those at Laodicea, and for all who have not met me personally. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding, in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely, Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. — Colossians 2:1–3 (NIV)
What’s Worth Fighting For?
Picture a parent watching over their child. If danger creeps near, that parent doesn’t just sit back. They leap into action, shout a warning or even jump in harm’s way to protect the one they love.
Some things are just worth fighting for. Paul was contending—fighting hard—for the church in Colossae.
Even though stuck behind prison bars, he poured his heart into praying and struggling for the believers’ growth and unity.
Why? Because he loved them and wanted them to be strong—rooted in faith and rich in understanding of Jesus Christ.
The Hidden Treasure
Paul calls Jesus the “mystery of God.” Imagine hunting for a hidden treasure chest buried underground.
You follow clues, dig tirelessly, and suddenly—there it is, glittering in the sunlight. That’s Christ. The Bible is our treasure map, pointing us straight to Him.
And when we open God’s Word, we discover “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” resting in Christ alone.
The journey isn’t always smooth—there will be obstacles and detours. But the real treasure isn’t just what we learn; it’s knowing Christ Himself.
Paul’s Example
Paul wasn’t just cheering from the sidelines. He labored, prayed, wrote, and suffered for the church’s sake.
He wanted everyone to discover and cling to Christ. He was following his Master’s lead.
Jesus contended for us on the cross, carrying our sin and shame. He fought the fight no one else could—then rose victorious three days later.
We carry this treasure, Paul says, in our fragile earthly bodies. We’re like jars holding priceless gems!
Our Call Today
The Christian walk isn’t a walk in the park. Jesus warned, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
We’re called to a living faith—not lazy or passive. One that prays, encourages, and points others to Christ.
Our fight isn’t angry or violent, but filled with love, prayer, truth, and perseverance.
Reflection Questions
When was the last time you fought for someone as Christ fights for you?
How can you follow Jesus’ example this week? Maybe through prayer, encouragement, or sharing the gospel.
Invite someone to open God’s Word with you. Even a simple step like reading a verse together can start them on the treasure hunt for Christ.
