DAY 3 – Love for the Church, Power in the Gospel by Pastor Dick
We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people—the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you.
In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.
You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.— Colossians 1:3–8 (NIV)
1. Loving Jesus Means Loving His Family
Let’s face it, you can’t claim to be tight with Jesus but grumble about His family. The Church is the world’s biggest family reunion, and loving Jesus means loving His people—even when, at times, they drive you a little bonkers.
This doesn’t mean we gloss over hurts or ignore mistakes in the Church. None of us are perfect (if you ever find a perfect church, don’t join—you’ll ruin it!).
But just as Jesus loves us despite our mess-ups, we’re called to love each other. The Colossians showed this kind of Spirit-powered love, and so can we.
If it feels tough, simply ask Jesus to enable you love His family as He does.
2. The Gospel Works Everywhere
Romans 1:16 says the gospel is God’s power to save everyone who believes. Doesn’t matter your address, accent, or past—God’s good news can reach you.
Paul saw the gospel take off all over the ancient world—places that never heard of God before. And today, it’s still spreading across the globe, from Africa to Asia to every corner.
God invites us to join Him in this mission. When we share the gospel, it takes root and bears fruit in people’s lives—just as it did with the Colossians.
Power in the Gospel
Notice, Paul says the gospel “bears fruit and grows”—not just adding more church members, but changing hearts from the inside out.
Faith, love, and hope flourish wherever the gospel lives.
That’s the true power of the gospel:
It changes lives.
Unites people who wouldn’t normally mix.
Fills hearts with love, hope, and gratitude.
Living It Out
Why is loving the Church part of loving Jesus?
Where have you seen the gospel making a difference around you?
This week, look for an opportunity to share the hope of Jesus with someone—maybe by a simple act of kindness, a listening ear, or an encouraging word.
