DAY 28 – They Proved To Be A Comfort To Me by Pastor Dick

Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, with Mark the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him), and Jesus who is called Justus. These are my only fellow workers for the kingdom of God who are of the circumcision; they have proved to be a comfort to me. —Colossians 4:10–11 (NKJV)

The Power of Just Being There

Have you ever noticed how sometimes, the best comfort isn’t a sermon or a string of wise words? It’s just having someone show up and sit with you.

Job’s friends got it right—at least for the first seven days! They didn’t say a thing. They just sat and grieved with him. Their quiet presence was a greater act of love than any speech they could’ve made.

Paul, writing from prison, doesn’t go into long explanations. He simply names Aristarchus, Mark, and Justus—three good friends whose company, loyalty, and steadfast faith have meant the world to him.

They were there. Sometimes, that’s the greatest ministry of all.

How Can We Comfort Others?

Friend, comforting isn’t complicated. It’s taking time to visit someone who’s lonely. Giving a call or sending a note.

Sitting in silence if needed, so the other person knows they aren’t alone. Being present—that’s a gift! I like to think of it as “the ministry of just showing up.” (No fancy degree required!)

And let’s remember, God is the original Comforter! He’s always present—never taking a vacation day—and Jesus called the Holy Spirit “the Comforter” for a reason.

We’re invited to join Him by coming alongside others, too.

Friendship Makes the Journey Sweeter

Jesus calls us friends. Abraham was called God’s friend. Paul’s friend Aristarchus stuck by him, even when things got ugly.

A true friend makes both burdens and blessings easier to share. Like the saying goes, “Grief shared is grief halved; joy shared is joy doubled.”

I don’t know about you, but I’m grateful for the people who make my joys bigger and my griefs a little smaller—sometimes with nothing but a warm smile and a hot cup of tea.

The Lord Uses Comforting Friends

If God puts someone on your heart today, maybe that’s His gentle nudge: "Go be present. Go listen. Go share My love."

We may never know the full impact of simply showing up, but in God’s kingdom, little acts done in love go a long way.

Reflection Questions

  • Would your friends say you’re loyal and faithful—someone they could count on for comfort?

  • Who’s been that loyal friend for you?

  • Today, try the “ministry of presence.” Listen well. Care deeply. Just be there for somebody who needs it.

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Comforter and Friend I always need. Make me a loyal, caring friend for those around me. Help me offer kindness, presence, and a patient ear. Use my small acts of comfort to share Your big love. Amen.
