DAY 20 – Put on Love by Pastor Dick
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” — Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)
Clothing Yourself in Christ
Paul reminds us of who we really are: God’s chosen, holy, and dearly loved. Because of that, our lives should reflect His character—even when it’s messy or hard.
He paints a picture of our spiritual wardrobe, full of:
Compassion
Kindness
Humility
Gentleness
Patience
Forgiveness
These virtues are like clothes that show the world we’ve been transformed by Christ’s presence within us.
The Thread That Binds
Paul then says, “Put on love over all these virtues.” Imagine making a quilt with lots of beautiful fabric pieces—but no thread to hold them together.
It would quickly fall apart. Love is that sturdy thread. It holds all these virtues tight and makes them work together in perfect harmony.
What Kind of Love?
This isn’t just your everyday love for family or friends. Paul is talking about agape love—God’s unconditional, sacrificial love.
It’s the same love God showed us through Jesus, forgiving and giving His life.
Paul reminds us simply: “God is love.” And that’s the only kind of love strong enough to truly change us and unite us.
Living It Out
When we put on love, everything else falls into place:
Compassion grows out of agape love.
Gentleness softens us from the inside.
Forgiveness becomes possible, even when grudges seem easier.
Humility follows because love means putting others first.
Like a quilt sewn tightly by God’s perfect love, we become a beautiful picture of unity.
Reflection Questions
Where else do you see agape love in the Bible or in your life story?
How can you “put on love” toward those who are difficult or frustrating?
Today, pick one person and intentionally show them agape love—not just kindness, but self-giving love that reflects Christ.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for clothing me with Your love through Christ. May I put on love each day so those around me see You. Stitch my life with compassion, kindness, gentleness, and humility, all held together by Your perfect love. Amen.
