DAY 15 – Connected to Christ by Pastor Dick
So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. — Colossians 2:16-17 (NKJV)
A New Focus: Warning
Paul’s been building a beautiful picture for us about who Christ is and what He’s done.
Now he shifts gears and offers a warning—not from wild parties or mysterious cults, but from the greatest spiritual fun police: legalism.
The Struggle of the Early Church
Imagine you lived your whole life under the Law of Moses, strict rules and all. Then Christ comes and declares freedom! But freedom is a tough pill to swallow. Many tried to keep one foot in the old Law and one in Christ.
False teachers saw this insecurity and jumped in, pushing rules and rituals like spiritual gatekeepers who held the keys—and the donations.
Paul says, “No! Those old shadows don’t lock the door anymore. Christ is the real deal, and in Him, you already have everything you need.”
Who Are You Connected To?
Paul points out that these false teachings didn’t come from Christ; those pushing them weren’t connected to Him.
The Colossians, however, were joined to Christ like a body to its head.
Christ is the Head—the source of nourishment, growth, and strength. Cling to Him, and you’re knit together in love and growing strong. Disconnect, and life withers.
The Same Is True for Us
This isn’t just ancient history; it’s a life lesson for today.
As believers, we:
Are connected to Christ.
He is our Head.
He is our source of life.
Stay rooted in Him or risk getting tangled in empty distractions—whether legalism, the latest worldly craze, or any “-ism” that pulls you away.
The Call Is Simple
Keep your connection alive. Remember Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Reflection Questions
What transition does Paul make here, and why is it so important?
What does it mean to be joined to Christ?
This week, consider your influences—what filter helps you stay connected to Christ over false voices?
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being my Head and source of life. May I keep deeply rooted and connected to You alone. Amen.
