DAY 11 – Rooted & Growing by Pastor Dick
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. — Colossians 2:6–8 (NIV)
The Power of Deep Roots
Have you ever dug around the roots of a big tree? They go way deeper than your last internet search history!
Some roots dive down 30 to 170 feet, holding the tree steady through storms and winds.
When a tree has roots that strong—gripping the earth like a toddler clutching a favorite candy bar—you can bet it won’t be going anywhere soon.
This is exactly the picture Paul paints for us when he talks about living a Christian life anchored deep in Jesus.
Deep roots in Christ = strong, steadfast faith. Shallow roots = risk of being blown over by the smallest trial.
Why Roots Matter
Life throws all sorts of storms our way. Doubts, trials, and apparently wise but deceptive philosophies that try to pull us away from truth.
Paul warns us not to get carried off by empty ideas rooted in human tradition or spiritual forces that are nothing compared to Christ.
Remember the foundation we stand on:
“Salvation is found in no one else…” (Acts 4:12)
“When you were dead in your sins… God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins” (Colossians 2:13)
“He canceled our debt and nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14)
That’s the solid ground for deep roots.
Abiding in Christ
Jesus calls Himself the Vine and us the branches in John 15. Stay connected to Him, and you bear fruit. Separate yourself, and well… things won't end well.
How do we grow those roots?
By letting the Spirit teach us truth
By digging into God’s Word
Through worship and heart repentance
The more time we spend with Him, the deeper our roots grow. And when the storms come, those roots will hold us steady.
A Personal Question
If you’re wrestling with doubt or fear, ask yourself:
How deep are my roots?
What am I truly rooted in?
Is it Christ, all in all, or something less secure?
Reflection Questions
How does Paul describe a strong Christian faith?
What are you doing today to root yourself more deeply in Christ?
What new step could you take to grow deeper roots?
Ask the Lord to help you spot empty messages and anchor your life firmly in the gospel truth.
