You Are Invited to Walk with God

More Than a Stroll

I know couples that walk together almost every day. They don't plan what they're going to talk about. They just get into step, and something happens. Their thoughts start to harmonize. The conversation deepens. By the time they're home, their closer than when they left the driveway.

That's a little picture of what God wants with you.

I've told you before that the New Testament is an invitation into fellowship with God. Now here's how the Bible describes that fellowship — over and over again, in one way or another:

walking with God. Not sitting in a classroom. Not checking off a list. Walking. Side by side. In step. Together.

And a lot of people don't appreciate how much fellowship there is in that.

What God Requires

In Micah 6:8, the Lord lays down what it takes for this kind of walk:

"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." (NIV)

The Hebrew is even more direct. More literally it says, "Humble yourself to walk with God."

Three things. That's it. Justice — living rightly. Mercy — loving others the way God loves them. And humility — the one that makes the other two possible. God says if we cultivate those three things, the result is a walk with Him. Real fellowship. The kind that deepens every day.

Prayer Response

Father, help me to humble myself to walk with You. I want to be in step with You, in harmony with You. Help me to cultivate, through the Holy Spirit, righteousness, mercy, and humility so that I may walk with You. In Jesus' name, amen.
