Fullness That Never Runs Dry: What Colossians 2:9-10 Really Means

Have you ever felt like you’re not enough? Like maybe you need to "do more" or "be more" to make God happy?

If so, I’ve got good news. When you say yes to Jesus, the Bible says you are already "full"—not because of anything you’ve done, but because of what Jesus has done for you!

Let’s look at Colossians 2:9-10 together:

For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority."

What Does "Fullness" Mean?

Sometimes, preachers talk about a glass filled with water to explain this. But if you’re like me, maybe that feels a little small and limited.

Picture something much bigger—like a fish in the ocean. The fish doesn’t try to fill itself up; it just lives in the vast waters all around and inside it. It never runs out of what it needs!

Or think about Niagara Falls—the endless, powerful water that keeps pouring day and night. I remember, back in the 70's, standing at Niagara Falls, the sound thundering in my chest as water poured endlessly over the edge.

I could feel the power in my bones and was caught up in the awe. God’s fullness in Christ is like that—always pouring, never stopping, flooding us with more than enough no matter how much we need.

It’s not just a trickle, but a waterfall of love, grace, and living water. And the best news is: you’re standing under His Niagara every single day!

We could never use it all up! God’s fullness in Jesus is like that: not just a little bit for you, but a never-ending supply, always flowing.

You Didn’t Put Yourself There—And You Can’t Take Yourself Out!

God places us into Jesus through faith, just like a parent adopts a child. You can’t earn it or work for it.

You simply trust what Jesus has done, and "in Christ you have been brought to fullness"!

What Does This Mean for Me?

  • You don’t have to worry if you “measure up.” In Christ, you already have what you need—His love, forgiveness, strength, and help and much more.

  • When you feel empty or not enough, picture that fish in the ocean or stand before those mighty falls in your mind. God’s life is still pouring into you!

  • The Holy Spirit makes these truths real. He takes words on a page and turns them into real-life, heart-level experiences. He’ll keep reminding you that you’re surrounded and filled, not missing out.

Reflection Questions

  1. When you picture yourself “in Christ,” which image helps you most: the glass, the fish in the ocean, or Niagara Falls? Why?

  2. Are there areas where you feel “empty” or “not enough”? Can you bring those to God and trust His endless fullness today?

  3. How has the Holy Spirit helped you see or feel God’s love and presence in a way that surprised you?

A Simple Prayer

Father God, thank You for placing me in Jesus, for filling me up with everything I need. Thank You that I don’t have to earn Your love or try to complete myself. Help me to rest and trust in Your unending fullness—like a fish in the ocean or water pouring over Niagara Falls. Holy Spirit, make these truths real inside me today. Amen.
