Feeding on the Word of God

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold—than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover, by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them, there is great reward. —Psalm 19:7–11

Jesus put it plainly: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. —Matthew 4:4

The Bible Isn’t Optional

Let’s be honest—life has enough trouble without trying to live it hungry. I’m not talking about missing lunch.

I’m talking about missing your spiritual food. The Word of God is the daily bread your soul needs.

I’ve been at this a long time, and I can tell you, skipping Scripture for a few days is like skipping meals... you start feeling weak and cranky, and it doesn’t take much to knock you over.

Why We Need the Word Every Day

God’s Word is more than ink on paper—it’s living and powerful.

It will strengthen your faith, steady your emotions, sharpen your wisdom, grow your character, and free you from things that try to chain you down.

Nothing else can do all that. Not inspirational quotes. Not a quick pep talk. Only Scripture has that kind of power.

Receiving the Word is as basic—and as necessary—as eating. You need it for:

  • Spiritual health

  • Steady growth in Christ

  • Guidance when life gets confusing

The Joy of Daily Reading

Reading the Bible every day isn’t just “something we’re supposed to do.” It can actually become one of the happiest parts of your day.

Psalm 119 says it lights your path when you’re walking through dark places. Proverbs 3 promises God will direct your steps. Psalm 19 reminds us His Word rejoices the heart.

I’ve seen all of that happen—not just in my life, but in countless others.

Let God Guide You

Here’s one secret I’ve learned: don’t just plow through the Bible on autopilot. Invite the Author to walk you through it.

It’s His Word, after all. Let Him choose which page your heart needs most that day. And here’s my playful rule of thumb: don’t turn out the light at night without first turning The Light on.

One bedtime chapter can change how you rest—and how you wake up.

Discussion Questions

  1. What small adjustment could you make to bring more consistency to your Bible reading?

  2. How has God’s Word personally nourished, guided, or comforted you lately?

  3. Can you remember a time when Scripture gave you exactly the wisdom you needed?
