“And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.” —Luke 24:45
Bible Study With Jesus—Now That’s an Experience!
You ever wish you could sit down and learn straight from Jesus? Well, that’s exactly what the disciples got on the road to Emmaus.
No wonder their hearts felt like campfires when Jesus opened their minds to the Scriptures (see Luke 24:32)! I’d love to have been a fly on the wall for that Bible study.
Two Big Surprises
Jesus didn’t just tell them what they already knew—He flipped their understanding upside down (in the best way).
First, He explained that the Messiah must suffer and rise from the dead on the third day (Luke 24:46).
That was a twist—the popular story back then was, “When Messiah comes, He’ll stay forever. Death? Not on the schedule!” (John 12:34).
Second, Jesus told them that repentance and forgiveness of sins would be announced in His name to everyone. Not just Israel, but the whole world.
Now, that didn’t fit the disciples’ expectations either (see Acts 1:6). The Messiah’s mission was bigger and better than anyone imagined—global, not just local.
Hearts on Fire—Minds Wide Open
So, Jesus walked them through the Old Testament and showed that His death and resurrection had always been God’s plan.
And that plan? It was for everyone—a crucified and resurrected Savior for all people, everywhere.
You could almost hear gears turning and hope rising in their hearts. Suddenly, their minds were opened, and their hearts burned.
It wasn’t just news. It was good news—world-changing news.
Make It Personal
Let’s be honest, friend. We all have a few half-baked ideas we’ve picked up along the way. If the disciples needed their minds opened, it’s a safe bet you and I could use a little help too.
So, let’s pray this together:
O Lord, save us from the popular misconceptions. Open our minds when we read our Bibles—don’t let us settle for easy answers or old assumptions. Set our hearts on fire with Your truth, and help us share it with our world: Jesus really is the Savior for all sinners!
And remember—sometimes what’s popular isn’t actually true, and what’s true changes everything.
Keep asking, keep learning, and let Jesus warm your heart and widen your understanding.
