A Preacher’s Question on the Streets of London

Years ago, I heard about a preacher who used to preach on the streets of London. After his meetings, he’d make it a habit to talk with folks who had stayed behind.

Often, he’d ask a simple, straightforward question, “Are you a Christian?”

The Hesitant Answers

You wouldn’t believe how many times he got answers like:

  • “I think so.”

  • “I hope so.”

  • “I try to be.”

  • Or even, “I don’t know.”

Whenever you hear those kind of hesitant replies, it tells the same story:

The person’s faith isn’t anchored in the one sure foundation—a personal, firsthand relationship with Jesus.

When you really know Him—face-to-face, heart-to-heart—you won’t hedge your answer.

Asking the Question to You

So, friend, let me ask you the same, "Are you a Christian"?

I’m not talking about church attendance or singing a few hymns. I’m asking if your faith is built solidly on a direct, personal relationship with Christ—the kind where you can say, without hesitation, “I know Him.”

Job’s Simple Advice

Here’s a gem of wisdom from the Old Testament, something worth framing by your front door:

“Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace; thereby good will come to you.” (Job 22:21)

“Acquaint”—I love that word.

It means, get to know Him. Spend time with Him. Walk and talk with Him. The more you know Jesus, the more your faith confession will shift—from uncertain mumbles to joyful, confident truth.

The Bottom Line

Faith that says “I think I am” or “I hope so” isn’t wrong. It’s just unfinished. Keep going. Keep seeking.

Keep getting to know Jesus until your heart rests in peace and your lips can say clearly,

Yes, I am His, and He is mine.”

That kind of confession doesn’t just answer questions—it changes your life.

Reflection Questions

  • If someone asked you today, “Are you a Christian?”—what would your honest answer be? What does your heart really say?

  • What does it mean for you personally to “acquaint yourself with Him”? How might you grow that relationship this week?

  • Think about a time you felt genuine peace with God. What helped you rest in that assurance? How can you return to that kind of trust today?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that knowing You isn’t complicated—it’s personal. Teach us to walk with You every day until our hearts are sure and our words steady. Help us move from “I hope so” to “I know You, Lord.” Let Your peace, born from truly knowing You, settle deep within us. Amen.
