Hi friends, Dick here. Let’s talk about this little phrase you see in Scripture: “in the Spirit.” It pops up often, especially when something special from God is about to happen—like a new revelation, direction, or work straight from heaven.
When God Wants to Do Something
Take John in Revelation. He said, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard… and I saw.”
That’s how God opened up amazing things to him—John was tuned in to God, like turning the radio to the right station.
The same thing happened to Ezekiel and Simeon; they were “in the Spirit,” and God revealed His plans.
What Does “In the Spirit” Mean?
To be “in the Spirit” simply means we’re awake to God. Our hearts aren’t caught up in our worries, or the noise around us—we’re ready for God’s voice.
It’s like tuning out distractions so we can hear what God's saying and let Him lead our steps.
Being God’s Child
One key mark of every Christian is the Holy Spirit living inside. This gives us a new sense of God’s guidance—almost like an internal compass.
Sometimes, it’s just knowing what’s right or suddenly sensing God directing us from within. Walking “in the Spirit” isn’t just about knowing, but also about obeying those gentle nudges from God.
Why Does It Matter?
Everything God wants to do in our lives depends on being “in the Spirit.” When we gather, if we come tuned in and open, God can speak and move.
But if we’re distracted or upset, we might miss what He has for us. The enemy loves to try to get us out of the Spirit—and that’s exactly when we need to recognize his tricks and hold tight, asking God to help us stay focused.
It’s Possible Anywhere
You might think, “I need perfect quiet, or a church service, or better circumstances.”
But Scripture shows John was on a lonely island and God spoke to him; Ezekiel was among exiles, but God gave him visions.
No matter where we are, if the Holy Spirit is inside us, we can be “in the Spirit.” That’s our hope and assurance as believers.
Want to keep growing? Make it a habit to ask God to help you be “in the Spirit,” every day and in every moment, whether you’re alone or with others. God loves to meet us right where we are!
